Where in the US are Americans Moving?
United Van Line’s 45th Annual Movers Study was released this month and contains some new trends in US migration patterns. In particular, South Carolina was listed in the top 3 states with the highest percentage of inbound migration.
Overall, the data indicates Americans are moving away from densely populated cities to lower-density areas.
The following map indicates the 5 states with the largest percentage of inbound migration (blue) and the 5 states with the highest percentage of outbound migration (red). Vermont (74%), South Dakota (69%), South Carolina (63%), West Virginia (63%) and Florida (62%) ranked high as popular new destinations, while Americans appear to be leaving New Jersey (71%), Illinois (67%), New York (63%), Connecticut (60%) and California (59%) at a faster rate than other states.
